Bachman Valley, Maryland One Place Study

This profile is part of the Bachman Valley, Maryland One Place Study.

This area originally straddled the border between Frederick and Baltimore Counties. Now it's in Carroll County. Its largest town is Manchester. Melrose is nearby. The local newspaper was the Westminster Advocate.

A referendum in October 1833 referendum sought public support for the creation of Carroll County out of pieces of Frederick and Baltimore counties.

The town of Dug Hill, now known as Manchester, was (for tax reasons) opposed to formation of a new county. (Did you know Manchester was nicknamed Noodle Doosey because the German immigrants hung noodles to dry on their front porches?)

After the election, infuriated residents in Manchester dragged a cannon up to the top of Dug Hill and repeatedly fired on Westminster.

Hi everyone. This is a question regarding some adopted entries, I only ask here because when I do a general web search for Bachmann Valley, most of the top "hits" are WikiTree. Is Bachmann Valley an appropriate location for a birth in *1835*, or should I be searching for a more specific city/town or county in Maryland?

'Appreciate the cannon drawing :) That definitely adds to imagining that day!

Hi. I started using Bachman Valley as a location because so many people say Carroll County for early births/deaths even though it was created until 1837. Prior to that people were born in Frederick or Baltimore county but it can be hard to figure out which. Thanks for writing

There's a map of Frederick, Carroll & Baltimore Counties at https://hsccmd.org/carrolls-long-history/. It shows where the lines were & where they are now. I grew up in the northeast "corner" between Manchester & Hampstead -- not named on the map. Basically, if the town in question is on the west side of Carroll County, it was originally part of Frederick but that's a small portion of the whole. The map is almost half way down the page.
