James Baldock d. 1896 Jeparit

James Baldock (abt.1824-1896) died in Jeparit, Victoria, Australia in 1896. He appears in the Biographical Index of South Australians as the son of Thomas BALDOCK and Sarah GOADE.

Unfortunately many web genealogies have taken this as a primary source and not verified it's validity.

James' death certificate states that he is the son of Thomas BALDOCK and Sarah WALKER. He was born in Frant, Kent, and is 72 years 26 weeks, 3 days old on the day of his death (9 Jun 1896).

This has raised questions about all of the BALDOCK trees centered around the Kent/Sussex that are available online, as most of them conflate at least two families:

  • Thomas BALDOCK and Sarah WALKER in Frant
  • Thomas BALDOCK and Sarah GOADE

This page is intended to sort out the mess by bringing together all real evidence of these families.

The voyage of the Orissa 1839/1840

In order to get to Jeparit from Frant, James must have emigrated from the UK to Australia. The closest voyage to that mentioned in his obit is the ORISSA, arriving 10 March 1840. This means that all the Baldocks on the Orissa will not appear in any UK census.

According to various web sources the Baldocks on the Orissa are:

  • William BALDOCK and his wife Diana Frances AUSTEN
  • Emma BALDOCK, child of William and Diana
  • William Henry BALDOCK, child of William and Diana
  • Sarah BALDOCK and three children
  • James BALDOCK, son of Sarah

If this is our James, then Sarah is Sarah WALKER not GOADE.

The corresponding application/embarkation numbers are:

  • James, 1 male. Application No: 5421, Embarkation No: 3683
  • William, 1 male, 1 female, 2 children. Application No: 5422, Embarkation No: 3682
  • Sarah, 1 female, 3 children. Application No: 5423, Embarkation No: 3684

Note that both the application and embarkation numbers are sequential - so they all applied together and left together - suggesting a family group.

Sarah WALKER m. Thomas BALDOCK, 1903, Wadhurst

Looking for a marriage between Thomas BALDOCK and Sarah WALKER, we find one in Wadhurst on 2nd January 1803[1][2][3]. Wadhurst is 7.1km from Frant - so this looks likely.

I'm going to assume that the christening of Thomas BALDOCK on 11th March 1803 in Wadhurst is the likely reason for the marriage.[4][5]

I'm then going to assume that all births in Frant, to a Thomas and Sarah, and around the time of James' birth are also attributable to this family. So we end up with:

Given that Thomas doesn't appear to be on the Orissa, I'll assume that he dies before the voyage, and there is a likely burial in Frant on the 18th August 1834 at the age of 55. [23] [24]

We appear to have a seven-year gap between the first child and the second - are there more?

Sarah travels on the Orissa with three children, apparently. Who are they?

One of them could be Thomas Higginson - her orphaned grandson. Thomas is born c. 1834 to William HIGGINSON (1804-1838) and Philadelphia BALDOCK (1807-1837). Thomas' obituary states that he travels with his uncle James BALDOCK.[25][26]

Given that, the seven year gap between Thomas (1803) and John (1810) now has Philadelphia (1807).
