Ballard County, Kentucky

History/Timeline

Ballard County was formed in 1842 from part of Hickman and McCracken counties. It was named for Judge Bland Ballard.

Government Offices

  • The first courthouse was built in 1844 at a cost of $6,000. The courthouse was destroyed by fire on February 17, 1880.
  • When the county seat was moved to Wickliffe in 1882, the City Hall housed the court as the second courthouse.
  • The third and present courthouse was completed in 1905 at a cost of $25,000.

Major Highways

U.S. highway routes 51, 60, and 62 bisect the county. Connecting state routes complete the major roadway network with county roads completing the farm to market network. Interstate route 24 is 14 miles east of the county; Interstate route 57 is 6 miles west, and Interstate route 55 is 12 miles west. [1]
