Caleb White moved his household from another part of the same county to the area just west of where Towsers Branch flows into the Little Patuxent River in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States of America, sometime between the years 1830 and 1840. Caleb was in his forties. By 1850, the family farm was valued at $5000.

In Martenet’s Map of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, published in 1860, the family house appears with Caleb’s son’s name, G. F. White, at the southern end of the Fourth District. There was a grist and saw mill nearby on the Little Patuxent, and a store at the road intersection just down river (south). The house on the 1860 map stood in the vicinity of the cemetery’s present day location.

Maryland’s Environmental Resources and Land Information Network (MERLIN) shows two real estate parcels for the cemetery: parcel 0112 deed liber 01183 folio 0171 owner name White Barber Cemetary Corp, and parcel 0372 deed liber 01018 folio 0149 owner name White Barber Cemetery. The first parcel is generally the wooded and ridged approach from the road, and the second parcel is the cemetery ground area itself. The surrounding area is now marshland, and high power transmission lines run east-to-west in a field just north of the wooded area.

The approach to the cemetery is on the north side of Conway Road, generally across from 2647 Conway Road, and starts behind a pair of wooden posts covered in vegetation much of the year. The geographic coordinates of the approach entrance are approximately 39.027833, -76.710192 . Just to the east is a manufacturing property. Just to the west is a gated and wooded dirt access road to the power transmission line field, and further to the west is the Conway Road traffic circle with Patuxent Road and Meyers Station Road. The ground of the cemetery approach begins at road level, but becomes the level top of a ridge between two excavated areas before reaching the cemetery. Coordinates of the Barber-White Cemetery itself are approximately 39.029440, -76.709700 .

Caleb White became the first person now known to be buried at the location, in 1849 — “in the 61st year of his age” according to his grave marker. Next were a grandson (Wilbur Fisk Byrn) and granddaughter (Georgianna Byrn) in 1851. Son-in-law George Barber entered the cemetery in 1852. Grandson Caleb Francis Byrn followed in 1859. Next was a granddaughter, Eliza White Barber, in 1860. Grandson Joseph Wyatt Barber died during the Civil War and was buried in 1863. Two very young great-grandchildren followed in 1872 — Louisa Blanche White and Joseph Wyatt Barber (nephew of the Civil War veteran).

Caleb’s wife, Eliza (Cruse) White, was buried in this family cemetery in 1878, nearly thirty years after Caleb himself. Son George F. White was buried there in 1880. Daughter-in-law Louisa (Brewer) White and son-in-law William Byrn entered in 1882. Grandson Caleb White was buried in 1888. The senior Caleb White’s daughter, Sarah (White) Byrn, was buried there in 1889.

Caleb’s daughter, Ann (White) Barber, was buried in this family cemetery in 1901. Grandson George Barber was buried in 1907. Great-grandson Edward Barber was buried in 1914. Granddaughter-in-law Isabella (Collinson) Barber was buried in 1919. Great-grandson George Benton Barber was buried in 1937.

A memorial marker was placed in the cemetery in 2015 for Caleb’s great-great-great-great-grandson, Thomas Edward Barber.

There are two additional marked graves in the cemetery, currently of undocumented relationship. Mayonia W. Linthicum (daughter of Joshua & E. C. Linthicum) lived 7 short months, died, and was buried in summer 1882. Dorothy G. Linthicum lived nearly 4 years, and was buried at the cemetery in 1894.

See the cemetery’s WikiTree category page for additional data and links, including profiles of persons buried at the cemetery.
