About Baronies
- Irish baronies are historical administrative sub-divisions of counties, and larger than civil parishes that are no longer used. The first baronies corresponded to English hundred. Formed at the Norman conquest, they were the domains of Norman barons, who held their baronies by military service. Subdivisions into baronies continued until the the reign of James I of England, with later baronies created for ease of adminstration.[1]
- logainm.ie the Placenames Database of Ireland's website, developed by Fiontar (DCU) and The Placenames Branch (Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht), is primarily aimed at journalists and translators, students and teachers, historians and researchers in genealogy. Its resources include the current official placenames in Ireland as of 2012, placename variations, and maps. It also has recordings of the correct pronunciation of placenames in both Gaeilge and English.
