Introduction
The United Kingdom declared war on 5th August 1914. The British government did not conscript straight away and relied upon volunteers.
Call to Arms were posted in newspapers requesting men aged 19 – 30 to enlist for at least a period of 3 years or until the war is concluded.
It was estimated that over 1400 men from Barry had enlisted, by the end of 1914. It was later advised that it was estimated that 15,000 Barry men had served. Following conscription after 1916. It is estimated that 700 men died from Barry, 599 names are on the memorial hall. [1]
I have 2 members of my family who served in world war 1 and died, Charles William Brown and James Henry Moyst.
History of the Memorial Hall & Cenotaph
During the 1920's the people of Barry wanted to build a memorial for all the Barry people who died during the first world war. It was agreed for a hall and cenotaph would be fitting. The people of Barry were behind this idea wholeheartedly and each person donated a penny. The descendants of David Davies (David Davies who founded the docks) also generously donated. The cost of the hall was £26,000 - which in today's money is close to £4m.
The hall and Cenotaph were opened in 1932 and the theatre and hall were completed and opened in November 1933.[2]
In 2007 it saw the 75th anniversary of the opening of the Memorial Hall and Cenotaph, both in need of restoration and improvement. The trustees commissioned a report to survey the memorials and recommendations were made to restore them and bring them up to a legislative standard. The cost of the work was estimated at £60,000, which £92,000 was raised.
It has 1818 names for Barrians who gave their lives for freedom in two World Wars and subsequent hostilities. [3]
The Memorial Hall is now known as The Memo Arts Centre. However, it is popularly known as The Memo. It is currently the largest multi-arts venue in the Vale of Glamorgan and only cinema exhibitor in Barry. It regularly hosts arts events and concerts, including live music, dance and pantomime, workshops and community events. [4]
Every Remembrance Sunday there is a march that begins at King Square, Holton Road. The March goes down Holton Road where it briefly halts at the Merchant Navy Monument at the Civic Offices and then continues to the Cenotaph at the Memorial Hall. Wreaths are laid at the cenotaph and a 2-minute silence is held at 11 am.
There is an indoor service that takes place inside the Memorial Hall and finished at approximately 12 noon. [5]
