Background
Seaside Plantation (also known as Baynard's Seaside Plantation to distinguish it from other properties with similar names) was shaped like an hour-glass on its side.[1]
William Baynard was an early owner of Baynard's Seaside Plantation.
Joseph James Murray purchased from Master in Equity (and trustees, Eliz MacKay wife of Mungo Mackay, widow of William Baynard, Baynard property), 130 acres, bounding Francis Maxey, William Seabrook, John C. Mikell, and Mary Westcoat, to daughter Abigail Jenkins Murray[2]
When Joseph James Murray died, he left a share of the property to his daughter, Susanna Murray, who married James C. Meggett.[3]
Ephraim Baynard purchased this property from the Master in Equity and James C. Meggett in 1839.[4][5] This was one of three plantations owned on Edisto Island by Ephraim Mikell Baynard. Apparently, Baynard did not live here, preferring to reside at Rabbit Point Plantation.[1]
Before his death Ephraim mortgaged several of his plantations by deed to Thomas H. Willingham and Benjamin L. Willingham. This deed is close to unreadable due to multiple layers of writing on it. It is not understood if Ephraim charged $500 for the properties? The properties mentioned were Rabbit Point Plantation, Sea Side Plantation, and Little Edisto Plantation, and ???, as well as lands in Georgia. 25 Apr 1864.[6]
Thomas H. Willingham, a trustee of Ephraim M. Baynard, would seek for the return of these "abandoned" properties after the Civil War.[7]
In 1872, John Thorne, an African American businessman from Charleston paid $5000 for 750 acres of Ephraim Baynard’s “Seaside” Plantation.[8] It was re-named Freedmens Village, and land was subdivided to 35 stockholders in accordance with the size of their share.
