Introduction

Beaver Creek Plantation, built in 1776 and owned by noted planter and politician George Hairston (1750-1825), was a large slave-holding tobacco plantation and the center of an empire in tobacco-growing and slave-trading built by the Hairston family, Scottish emigrants to Pennsylvania in the early 18th century. It was a 30,000-plus acre royal land grant initially purchased from Col. Abram Penn.[1]The enslaved of Beaver Creek candle makers, tending to thousands of yam plants; in one day they made 660 candles.

He may have had a house in Charlotte, VA. In the 1810 census George Hairston held 7 enslaved people in Charlotte, Virginia, United States.[2]

In the 1820 census George Hairston held 65 enslaved people in Henry, Virginia.[3]

The Beaver Creek Ledgers have been made public by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Below is a manual transcription (to include profiles where identified) of 345 rows of enslaved names identified from the Account book, 1831-1869 which includes 78 scans and 152 pages, all handwritten. The description given is: "Household accounts for Beaver Creek and other plantations, possibly kept by Ann Hairston. A wide variety of entries document spinning and weaving, sewing, care of livestock, vegetable gardening, recipes, candle and butter making, and miscellaneous items purchased for the household. There is much information about enslaved people on the two plantations, including work performed, birth records, and clothing distributed. Many entries describe provisions lent or bartered to neighbors."[6]
