Biography
Benjamin Alexander Gates started out with 14 Slaves in 1830, 47 1840 and by 1850 he had 67. By 1853 he also accumulated over 2000 acres of land. On the plantation he had large variety of animal stocks such as cows and mainly sheep and swine. Wool was his main stay and in 1850 he had 200 lbs. of wool, 500 lbs. butter. His main crop was cotton and did have more than one gin house as mentioned in the will. 1850 his real estate was valued at $23200.
Benjamin K and Samuel M (grandsons) lived close with their families by in which in some places adjoined next to each other. Benjamin passed at the age 74, on 14 February 1854 and was buried in Meriwether County, Georgia in the family cemetery there on the property.
Plantation Owners
Benjamin Alexander Gates(owned until 1853, date of Will) Part of the plantation was passed to Benjamin K Gates and Samuel M Gates. A big part of the plantation was left to his wife Emaline until her death all that was not received at the time of will, was passed to Benjamin K and Samuel M as according to the will.
Emaline (Harman) Woodward (owned a part 1853-1869) Wife of Benjamin A Gates.
Benjamin Kolb Gates (owned a part1853-1862) Benjamin K owned BK Gates plantation in which the land he received from his grandfather was added to his land. After his death in 1865, his wife Nancy Ann (Keith) Gates) inherited. The part that Benjamin would receive after the death of his grandmother (Emaline), that part went to his children to be divided among them, according to the will.
Samuel Martin Gates (owned a part 1853-1860) After his death in 1865, his wife Arrie Ann (Brown) Bray inherited. The part that Benjamin would receive after the death of his grandmother (Emaline), that part went to his children to be divided among them, according to the will.
Acres
Over 2000 acres in will of Benjamin A to his wife Emaline, some to be divided t the time of the will and some later to be divided between Benjamin K and Samuel M after her death in Meriwether County Georgia. Benjman also owned another 40 acres in Troup County, Georgia (inherited by Samuel M Gates).
Family Cemetery
In Benjamin A Gates' will the part of the estate that was always to stay with main house, was the cemetery which was surrounded by a stone wall (verified in Benjamin A and Samuel K Gates Wills). Also, it may be known by the name of Tignor Cemetery as the photo of the cemetery fits the description of the cemetery described in the will.

Named Slaves
Mingo - wife of Benjamin A Gates, Emaline inherited "Mingo Gate who is a faithful slave and being the laws of Georgia cannot be set free. Therefore, he shall be favored forward in case he becomes aged, or inference will be provided for. The two hundred dollars given to my wife previously given and put into common stock, she is to take out before the division of my estate." (Item 2, page:218, Image 134 of 705). Mingo was about the age of 53 at the time of the Will.
Notes
Benjamin A Gates had one son Samuel Keaton Gates which the only thing he inherited was some debt forgiveness on debt he owed his father, about $1500 (according to the will). Benjamin K Gates seemed to be the favorite of the two grandsons. In which Benjamin K inherited more than his brother Samuel M. From reading all the wills there was a rift in the family going on between Benjamin A Gates and his son Samuel K Gates.
