According to Forebears.co.uk the Benson "surname is derived from the name of an ancestor, 'the son of Bennet' i.e. Benedict. I assume the majority of people with this surname in Canada, the United States, and probably Australia have their forebears in England, Ireland, and Scotland.

My fathers name was Ralph Emory Benson, not Emerson.
