Berkeley County was created on 10 February 1772 from Frederick County, Virginia.
Most historians believe the county was named for Norborne Berkeley, Baron de Botetourt, Colonial Governor of Virginia from 1768 to 1770.
It was one of 50 counties that were admitted to the Union as West Virginia on 20 June 1863.
It is a burned county.
