History

By the 1870s the Dimery Settlement had grown large enought that it was decided by the community that they needed their own church to serve their needs. On 25 March 1878, Sara Desda Turner sold two acres of land to John and James Dimery (sons of the community's founder, John Dimery) "for the use of church purposes." By 1886, a wooden church was constructed on the site. One of the first pastors was Ellis Cooper, a Native American who also helped construct the church. It was announced in the Horry Herald on 11 August 1887 that on the 7th of September Reverend J. W. Todd would preach at the "Dimerys Church."

The church soon became officially named Bethel, or Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. The church burned down in 1983 and had a congregation of over 100 persons at that time. Although the church was not rebuilt, the cemetery remains and has been well cared for by relatives of those interred there.
