Located 33 km south east of York in the Avon valley, land at Beverley was set aside for a townsite in 1830.

The town is believed to be named after a town in Yorkshire, as some of the earliest explorers of the Avon valley area were from Yorkshire.

Following is the Essay sent in for competition by Miss M. Hamersley. Next week we will publish Miss Leninie Mann's Essay. A cheque for the prize offered (£2 2s) has been forwarded to Miss Wansbrough, whose essay was published in last issue, and a silver propelling pencil has been posted to both Miss Hamersley and Miss Mann as consolation prizes.
