Big Families Overview

This is a research page to identify and develop the families of women and men who had an exceptionally large family and extends out to the first three generations of descendants. There are various claims about large families but most of these are difficult to verify. Wikitree seems the ideal place to carry out, verify and document that research in a collaborative group.

Deciding what is an exceptionally large family is an arbitrary decision. An initial suggestion is to include.

  • Women with more than 20 children
  • Men with more than 30 children
  • Individuals with more than 100 grand children
  • Individuals with more than 1,000 great grand children

In some cases big families on wikitree may be over inflated by duplicate records so working on this category may be a way to identify and merge away duplicates.

How you can help

  • Add [[Category: Big Family]] to qualifying individuals
  • Work on developing THIS page by developing the tables of individuals below
  • Research sources outside wikitree to identify people with big families that are not currently on wikitree and start profiles for them
  • Add and develop profiles for the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren generations. Many profiles who have a lot of children on wikitree don't currently have many of their grandchildren recorded for example.

An occasionally useful census form is the 1900/1910 US Census, which lists the total number of children and the number still living as of the census enumeration date. Kudos to the women who nurtured their children through the perilous health periods of that time.
