History
Benjamin started BK Plantation in 1830 close to Greeneville, Georgia, 14 slaves and owned up till his death in 1865 with 65 slaves. Quite a few were inherited from his Grandfather Benjamin A Gates in 1853 and his father Samuel K Gates in 1854. A few of the slaves were given to Benjamin and his wife Nancy as a wedding gift. As well as land that was inherited about 1000 acres from hs grandfather Benjamin A Gates, added to his own 600 acres.
Not much is known about the live stock or crops he may have had. But it is safe to suggest it was pretty much the same as his Grandfather Benjamin A Gates had on his plantation. By 1865 Benjamin K Gates . his Estate Value: $15000, Personal Estate Value: $45000.
Benjamin fought during the Civil War on the Confederate 60th Infantry, he survived the war and came home in in early 1865 (before June date of 1860 census) and died a few months later in November 1865. All of his property was left to his wife Nancy Ann, with the exception of a couple of slaves that he had given to his daughters. Any other property that was inherited from his grandfather’s estate was be equally divided between his children. And up on Nancy Ann’s death the rest of the property was to be divided by the children and the passed down to any grandchildren.
