To visit, proceed on Crosstown Road (from the corners under the I-89 overpass) and turn left onto Paine Tpke S.; take a right at the fork onto Brookfield Road, and proceed to the first right turn onto Black Road. Black Cemetery is located on the left about one quarter mile.

History

Black Cemetery, also known as Berlin Cemetery (old), was established in 1797 at Berlin, Washington County, Vermont, USA. It is believed to be the oldest cemetery in Berlin with graves dating from 1797 to 1885. The cemetery is located on a dead-end road and is surrounded by a stone wall.

The gravestones are mostly slate with a few granite stones. The large monolith located on the highest point of the cemetery has lost the urn that was on top.

9. Several broken stones, one piece reads, Samuel Tillotson died Oct. 17, 1838, age 62 yrs.
10. Piece of stone with only the following legible: Betsy, wife of Samuel Tillotson, died July 15, 1850, age 67 yrs.
11. John M., son of S. & B. Tillotson died, Sept. 26, 1846. Age 31yrs.
12. In memory of Mary S., daughter of Capt. Samuel and Betsey Tillotson. She died, Dec. 11, 1819, age 9 mos.
13. Daniel H. Tillotson, son of, Samuel. & Betsey Tillotson, died, August 9, 1813, aged 1 yr. 3 mos.

17. Dea. Joseph Curtis, was born at Mansfield, Conn., June 30, 1751 and died at Berlin, Vt. Dec. 20, 1833. Aged 82 yrs. “The memory of the just shall live.”
18. Ebenezer Knapp, born July 5, 1776, died Oct. 9, 1839. Aged 73 years.
19. Irene, wife of Ebenezer Knapp, died, May 22, 1842. Aged 64 years.

23. Geo. M. Stewart, died, Aug. 9, 1851. Aged 32 years, and 8 months. “Dear friends weep not for me.”
24. This involves three stones apparently in the same lot and one person. Stone at front of lot which has been broken, only. Mr. William McAllister could be deciphered. At the rear of the lot is an old stone, badly damaged that reads: In memory of, Mr. _______ McAlli_____who died, 12th ----1811. “Behold and see as you ___ pass by, As you are now ___ once was I, As I am now so you must be, Therefore prepare to follow me.” There is an American Legion marker and a flag. Directly in front of this stone is a new stone that reads as follows: "In memory of Mr. William McAllister who died March 12, 1811. Age 72. He was born at Londondary, N.H. The son of William and Jane Campbell McAllister - Scotch - Irish immigrants, his wife was Mary Clark. He was a soldier in the American Revolution from Jaffrey, N.H.

39. In memory of Abigail, wife of Jacob Black, who died Dec. the 10th, 1810 in her 58th year. Her duty finished to mankind To god her spirit she resigned. Marker in front with just the name A. Black.
50. Capt. John Hubbard died August 23, 1835. Aged 35 yrs. “Prepare to die."
51. John N., son of, John and Mary Hubbard, died March 21, 1836. Aged 1 yr. 8 mo. 1 da. First is an old stone in bad condition then a cluster of five not at all readable.
53. Betsey Hubbard aged 9 mo. 5 da. died July 17, 1799. Eber died Oct. 27, 1802. Age 7 mo. 16 da. Lucinda died Aug. 29, 1816. 1 yr. 2 mo. 26 da. Harriet died Jan. 22, 1820. Aged 6 yr. 4 mo. 6 da. Peter B. died Mar. 10, 1820. 9 mo. 8 da. Children of: Peter & Polly Hubbard.
56. Dea. Peter Hubbard died May 3, 1852 Aged 77 yrs. 6 mo. 11 da. Polly, his wife, died Oct.18, 1854. Aged 81 yr. 5 mo.Precious in the sight of the lord, is the death of his saints.

77. Willis P. Stewart (1843-1863) This stone is flat on ground and reads as follows: Willis P., son of John and Adeline Stewart died at Alexandria, Va. Aug. 14, 1863. Age 21. Member of Co. C. 13 Regt. Vt. Volunteers. Flag in DAR holder.
78. Eliza (Paul) Stewart (1806-1834) Eliza A., wife of John Stewart, Jr., died Sept. 6, 1834. Age 28 years, 2 months, 6 days.

Polly Wallace, his wife, died Aug. 20, 1850. 56 yrs. Front Side: Volney T. Heaton, age 37 yrs. died February 10, 1853. V. P. Heaton died July 14, 1813. Age 8 yrs. Left Side: Son of G. and P. W. Heaton. Aged 18 da. died May 22, 1804. Daughter died Mar. 16, 1813, 1 mo. 12 da.
