Plantation History
The Black Hammock Plantation was developed by John Hopkins who had received a land grant of 500 acres in the 1790s. When Nathan Atkinson sold his Bourbon Plantation, Camden County, Georgia around 1800, he bought Black Hammock Plantation from Tompkins.
The plantation was located in the northeastern part of Camden County, Georgia, in the Dovers Bluff, Hazards Neck area at the mouth of the Little Satilla River.
Upon his death in 1817, Nathan bequeathed the plantation to his son, Alexander Atkinson. Alexander was murdered by five of his slaves in 1840. The plantation remained with the Atkinson family until purchased by W.C. Kirby (date as yet unknown). Kirby's son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Kirby, Jr, acquired the property in the 70s (not known if 1870s or 1970s).[1]
