Background
A property containing 300 acres (900 acres by 1872), Blue House Plantation was first granted to William Fry, who passed it on to Ichabod Fry. The plantation was eventually owned by Constantine Bailey, known as "Con Bailey", who also owned the smaller Palmetto Plantation. Con Bailey was related to many of the Bailey clan on Edisto Island.[1]
Blue House plantation was also said to have belonged to a family called Dodd, and another called Fishburne.[2]
This plantation was passed from father to son in the Mikell family as well. See the will of Ephraim Mikell 1838[3] "There was a cotton house, a gin house, a cotton harbor for drying cotton, stables, barns, corn house, shop for preparing farm implements, a pump house, and two buildings that must have been for overseers, because one was called the Charlie House but he had been long dead years ago."[4]
By 1840 the plantation had gone into "decree of equity", which meant that after the death of Ephraim Mikell in 1831, and his father in 1838, Mrs. Mikell couldn't afford to keep the plantation belonging to her son.[5]
Civil War
Constantine Bailey owned the plantation during the Civil War. After the war the Freedmen's Bureau were allocating land to many of the freed persons on the sea islands. The following were issued land certificates to parcels of land on the Blue House Plantation property. Much of the land was returned to the owners so it is uncertain if those persons ever really received their parcel of land on the Blue House property.

In 1872 the Blue House Plantation was being sold at auction.[8]
