Plantation History
Boggy Swamp Plantation was located in northern Camden County, east of Old Post Road. Wayside Plantation was to the north, and Waverly Plantation to the south. It was established by David Brown about 1820. The Browns moved on to White Oak Plantation.
Alexander Atkinson (1796-1840) purchased Boggy Swamp Plantation in Camden County, Georgia, from his brother-in-law, David Brown (his sister Elizabeth's husband), in 1837.[1] He also owned Black Hammock Plantation, Camden County, Georgia that he inherited from his father in 1817.
Alexander passed away in 1840. He was beaten to death with hoes by five of his slaves in a cornfield on Boggy Swamp Plantation. The slaves, Lewis, Little Joe, Ned, and Prince, tried to escape to Savannah, but were captured, tried and convicted. They were hung near the spot the murder took place, which is now known as The Gallows. [2]
