Field Hospital # 4
was formed 11-18 Oct 1939 in Helsinki, Finland. [1] The hospital was then transported to Johannes [2], Finland where it was housed in several buildings, one of them the vicarage.

The russians bombed the hospital and the vicarage was totally destroyed leaving 24 people dead. The war diary claims that 6-7 bombs hit the vicarage. [3]

In the book Kunnia - isänmaa : Suomen ja Neuvostoliiton sota 1939-40 by W E Tuompo is a claim on page 390 [4] that this event led the Finns to abandon the use of the red cross insignia at field hospitals, as it pointed out easy targets for the Russian pilots.
