  • Boyle Heights is a neighborhood east of Downtown Los Angeles on the East Side of Los Angeles. For much of the twentieth century, Boyle Heights was a gateway for new immigrants. This resulted in diverse demographics, including Jewish American, Japanese American and Mexican American populations, as well as Russian American and Yugoslav populations.

The History of Boyle Heights

  • The East Los Angeles hight schools walkouts was a protest against against inequality and poor education system that denied Latinos and Latinas a quality education. The social protest began on March 1968 in which thousands of Mexican-American high-school students walked out of classes in the inner city of Los Angeles, protesting inequality in the public education system. The walkouts contributed to the wider The Chicano Civil Rights Movement of the late 1960s seeking civil rights reform for Latinos.
  • A day of rage in East LosAngeles on September 29, 1970 The march begin in East Los Angeles, and ended with planned speeches, picnic food, and music in a park. This was a Moratorium to protest the disproportionately the high number of casualties among Mexican-American soldiers serving in Vietnam. At twenty to thirty thousand strong, the crowd was the “largest demonstration [to date] ever mounted by people of Mexican descent living in the United States,” according to Escobar of the Los Angeles Times.



The East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, “responed to a minor disturbance a block away,” declaring the demonstration unlawful. The police charged with tear gasing and beating the crowd to disperse the scene. Three people were killed, including influential journalist Salazar-1516, who was shot through the head with a tear gas projectile. Even some conservative Mexican-American organizations called Salazar-1516 killing murder.
