Welcome

Welcome to the British Crown Dependencies and British Overseas Territories Project. BCDOTs for short!

Mission

This project is a forum for WikiTree members interested in creating, improving and collaborating on profiles of people who lived in British Crown Dependencies and British Overseas Territories. Project members can focus on specific geographical or other areas of interest. The goal of the project is to improve the quality and quantity of profiles of people who lived in British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies.

Crown Dependencies

The Crown Dependencies are the:

Within the Bailiwick of Guernsey there are three separate jurisdictions: Guernsey (which includes the islands of Herm and Jethou); Alderney; and Sark (which includes the island of Brecqhou). The islands of the Bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey are known geographically as the Channel Islands.

The Crown Dependencies are not part of the UK but are self-governing dependencies of the Crown. This means the United Kingdom is solely responsible for the defence of the Dependencies, and provides international representation for them, but the Dependencies have their own directly elected legislative assemblies, administrative, fiscal and legal systems and their own courts of law. The Crown Dependencies are not represented in the UK Parliament. They are not members of the Commonwealth of Nations.

Overseas Territories

The fourteen British Overseas Territories are territories under the jurisdiction and sovereignty of the United Kingdom; they do not, however, form part of it. Instead, they are those parts of the former British Empire that have not acquired independence or have voted to remain British territories. While each has its own internal leadership, most being self-governing, they share the British monarch as head of state.

The British Overseas Territories are

  • Anguilla
  • Bermuda
  • British Antarctic Territory
  • British Indian Ocean Territory
  • British Virgin Islands
  • Cayman Islands
  • Falkland Islands
  • Gibraltar
  • Montserrat
  • Pitcairn Islands
  • Saint Helena
  • Ascension
  • Tristan da Cunha
  • South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
  • Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia (Cyprus)
  • Turks and Caicos Islands

Task List

Our project members:

  • take responsibility for managing profiles or family groups and work on adding sources, merging duplicates, correcting information and adding categories
  • respond to questions on G2G
  • gather together research resources and guidance to support members
  • collaborate with other projects with historical or geographical links to the BOTCDs

Pre-1700

If you wish to create pre-1700 profiles for people who were born or died in any of these places it is important that a reliable source is used at the time of profile creation. This is the help page that covers creating pre-1700 profiles. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles User generated family trees and Family Search person profiles are not considered reliable for the purposes of pre-1700 profile creation.

Hi

I have extensive Gibraltarian ancestry thanks to my Gibraltarian mother.

I have actually identified every single one of my ancestors born in Gibraltar all of whom have profiles on WikiTree.

I'm more than happy to help or give advice to anyone trying to trace ancestors from Gibraltar.

Thanks Eddie. Are you happy for me to add you to the project members list?

Cheers, Elizabeth

Yes absolutely no problem with that, happy to help !
Hello! I'd like to join this project. I am coordinating the new Cyprus Project, which includes the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia. Thanks, Mark

Thanks Mark - that's a tie in that should work well. Cheers, Elizabeth :-)
Hi all, I'd like to join this project. I have a number of Hendys from Jersey, and have family who still live there. I plan to take a trip over this year and could coincide it with an archives visit. Thanks :-)

Hi All,

I'd like to join this project. I've been working on the de Carterets for quite some time as they are part of my family group. My particular interest is the Sark mob, but I've also got many connections in Jersey & Guernsey. Cheers Alan

Thanks Alan and welcome! I'll add you to the project page and include your research interests. Cheers!
Hi Everyone

Any chance we could have some location sticker templates added for the above Dependencies/Territories?

I have a few family profiles to which they could be added and I’m sure there must be others needing the same.

Kind regards

Malc.

Hi Malc, I'll talk to the sticker template people and see what we can come up with. Cheers, Elizabeth
Malc, I've added a link to the already existing Isle of Man sticker template in the list of links on this page. When (hopefully) we get a few more stickers, Ill add a separate section for them. Cheers!
On William Stephenson - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stanger-449 - there is a Bermuda box, but no Bermuda email causing Error 931: ProjectBox Without Project Account. Please either add the Project email or change the Project box to a Project sticker.

Thanks D! Will add those to the relevant pages.
Am slightly confused. You state there are 14 overseas territories yet list 16 places, one actually being two separate bases on Cyprus. Can you clarify?
posted by John Macdonald
Hi John, I think the discrepancy is because sometimes the BOTs are lumped together and counted as one eg St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Certainly that is how they are presented in Wikipedia. Cheers, Elizabeth
This is the old project page for Bermuda. I'll clean it up over the next little while but it may still have some usefulness. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Bermuda

Thank you Stu. That would be super. :-)
I would like to join this project. I am especially interested in Guernsey, because my GGgrandparents were born there.

Thank you for your interest Karen and welcome to the project. As yet, we have nothing organized in the way of badges or stickers for project members, but as soon as we've got that organized I'll contact you. Cheers, Elizabeth :-)
