British Sovereign (Ship 1840)

The British Sovereign made Numerous Voyages to the Australian Colonies in the 19th Century

This 491 ton barque British Sovereign was built in 1840 at Bishopwearmouth Panns in northern England. She made numerous voyages to the Australian colonies carrying both free immigrants and convicts in the 19th Century.

Not to be confused with the barque of 351 tons of the same name under Captain Jones, which left Sydney on 8 January 1847, and New Zealand, on a sandalwood voyage. The vessel was wrecked off Efate Island, New Hebrides, 22 April 1847. The Master and most of the crew were murdered by natives. The last of the survivors were rescued by the Clarkstone, a whaling ship of Sydney under the captaincy of Captain Nixon. Passengers in History
