Broadkill Hundred was formed in 1696 as one of the original Delaware Hundreds. Broadkill Hundred is named after the Broadkill river. The earliest settlers of Delaware were Dutch and the word "kill" is a now obsolete Dutch word for creek, or fast flowing stream. It is also known as "Broadkiln Hundred".
