History
Broken Hill Cemetery is situated on the Barrier Highway (Rakow Street), Broken Hill, on the very outskirts off Broken Hill City, New South Wales, Australia. It is both historical and modern.
The first burial was 1889 and the Cemetery is still in use today with plans for future growth. There are over 60,000 grave sites in the Cemetery and many sites contain multiple burials.
"More than 60,000 people interred in Broken Hill's cemetery. Each grave site represents a person's story and, in many ways, a city is itself a composite of the people that live there and the combined telling of thousands of stories.
The Rakow Street cemetery is a historical record of the people of Broken Hill, as well as their struggles and triumphs, which dates all the way back to the city's earliest beginnings.
As the gates are drawn each morning it is as though a time capsule is being reopened, allowing thousands of people to visit the site each year.
Within the sadness and solemnity are the stories of triumph and the earnest commemorations of lives lived throughout the far west of New South Wales [1]
LEST WE FORGET
The Commemoration walls provide the opportunity to place a poppy next to the Soldier's name, who served in the World War I, World War II or Vietnam Conflict, that someone may choose to honour.
