Began when Thomas Brooks tried to rob an old Texas Ranger. Thomas was shot and died. His family said Jim McFarland got Brooks to make the attempt and then told the ranger ahead of time. They attributed the death to this.

McFarland contended that Thomas had been in a gang of thieves but chose to jump the gun and do the robbery alone.

Brooks's family did not believe this as fact and thus, the feud began.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
