Location and History
A nineteenth century cast iron fence surrounds the 30-square-feet Brown Family Cemetery situated on the current property of the Avondale Baptist Church in Bibb County, Georgia which is recorded as land lot 209, District 4, and built in 1942.[1] The cemetery is on the left side of the driveway, and approximately 78 feet in front of the gate to the Avondale Baptist Church Cemetery.
John T. Brown and his wife, Cynthia E. Brown, owned lot number 209 originally in Houston County, now in District four (4) of Bibb County, as well as the adjoining lot 208. Capt. John T. Brown died in 1868, and was buried in the family grave yard.[2][3] Cynthia E. Brown set her hand and seal to her Last Will and Testament on the 23rd day of October 1883 bequeathing unto her daughter Ollalee S., wife of John L. Cherry, the portion of land known as the grave yard thirty feet square, in addition to that which had been heretofore deeded to her consisting of 98 acres more or less and better known as the Pardue Place. She bequeathed to her other children, Henry C. Brown, Seymour M. Brown, and Veline B. Brown 60 acres each being part of the said lot No. 209.[4]
A deed conveying a right of way confirms the location of the Brown Family Cemetery. On the 13th of September 1787, Ollalee S. Cherry, of Bibb County, Georgia, conveyed unto the Georgia Southern and Florida Railroad Company of Georgia a tract or strip of land 100 feet wide the same being 50 feet on each side of the center line of said railroad said land to be used as a right of way containing three and one fifth acres, and bounding on the lands of Seymour M. Brown and Mrs. Margaret Flynn.[5] The 1869 Bibb County District Map shows Rutland, and South Western RR running through lots number 208 and 209. The railroad tracks run on the back property line of the current day Avondale Baptist Church.
