Background
The Montgomery-Janes-Whittaker House, best known today as Buena Vista, is a historic Federal-style plantation house in Autauga County, Alabama, south of Prattville. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 25, 1974.[1] The house is currently owned by the Autauga County Heritage Association and operated as a historic house museum.[2] It's coordinates are 32.42444°N 86.45194°W.
Construction of the house was started in 1822 by one of the first landowners, either John W. Freeman or Josiah Huie. It was completed by the next owner, William Montgomery, in 1844. Mary Emma Scott Stewart purchased the property in 1910 from the Montgomery family. Jacob Janes then owned the house for two years before it was sold to the Fred Whittaker family in 1937. The Whittaker family restored and added modern amenities to the house. They owned it until 1978, when the house was inherited by M.W. Petrey, Jr. It was sold again in 1982 to the Union Camp Corporation, a pulp and paper company that allowed the Autauga County Heritage Association to preserve and maintain the house. Following Union Camp's acquisition by International Paper, the new owner donated the house to the association in 2007.[2][3]

There are three listings in the 1860 Federal Slave Schedule for Ann Montgomery in Autauga, Autauga, Alabama Territory as follows:
- One of the listings for Ann may respresent William and Ann's daughter Ann being one female slave aged 14[4]
- One of the other listing for Ann may represent the slave shared by her other daughters being one female slave aged 27[5]
- The final listing for Ann appears to match the 1850 Slave Schedule entries for her husband William Montgomery with a listing of approximately 107 slaves. See Slaves of Ann Montgomery, Autauga County, Alabama.[6]
1866 Alabama State Census
The purpose of this list is to identify any prior slaves who might have taken the name of the slave owners of Buena Vista Plantation. This list is of the Heads of Household in the 1866 Alabama State Census[7] where the criteria is that LastName = Montgomery AND Location = Autauga County, Alabama AND race = Colored
