SS Bulimba Sailed from Gravesend in England on the 27th of January 1887
SS Bulimba sailed from Gravesend in England on the 27th of January 1887. First making port at Townsville in Queensland on the 17th of March 1887. Then the 23rd of March at Maryborough then finally Brisbane on the 24th of March. This was the first of two voyages to Australia in 1887 bring immigrants to the Queensland colony.
The following appeared in the Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton, Qld. : 1878 - 1954) of Wednesday 16 March 1887.
THE British-India Company's steamship Bulimba sailed from Gravesend on the 27th of January for Queensland ports with the follow-ing immigrants :-169 single men, 113 single women, 185 married couples and children, making a total of 457 souls. The single men and married couples in this vessel are all of the agricultural class, and have been selected principally from the East Riding of York-shire, Lincolnshire, and Scotland. The only saloon passenger the Bulimba has for Rock-hampton is Mr. Frank Leonard.
In connection with emigration from the United Kingdom to this colony we give the following extract from the European Mail of the 28th of January :-" A large number agricultural labourers and their friends are emigrating to Queensland from the 'East Riding of Yorkshire, in which district many hundreds of hands are out of employment 'The number of young unmarried farm ser-vants out of work at the present time is unpre-cedented, but the emigration movement is chiefly confined to married couples who have saved a little money, and they represent the best class of labourers, The farmers are said to be looking on in dismay at the exodus, as such men cannot readily be replaced when the labour market improves."
