Burgesstown Plantation
Frederick R Cotten established Burgesstown Plantation in Northern Leon County, Florida, between 1850 and 1855. The plantation bordered the Ochlockonee River on the west and Lake Iammonia on the East. It became one of the largest cotton plantations in Florida, consisting of 8,100 acres. Slaves were used to work 3,800 acres of improved land.
The Leon County Florida 1860 Agricultural Census shows that Burgesstown Plantation had the following:[1]
- Improved Land: 3,800 acres (1,500 ha)
- Unimproved Land: 4,300 acres (1,700 ha)
- Cash value of plantation: US$22,000
- Cash value of farm implements/machinery: $200
- Cash value of farm animals: $600
- Number of enslaved persons: 274[1]
- corn: 13,000 bushels (460 m³)
- cotton: 825 bales

There is a Bill of Sale from 1851, which indicated Frederick R Cotten purchased 35 named slaves from Cary Whitaker of Halifax County, North Carolina, for $15,000. Dr. Cary Whitaker was Frederick's uncle, and the owner of Strawberry Hill Plantation in Halifax County, North Carolina.[2][3] The named slaves included:
