I remember spending summers on my grandparents farm - Charle and Florence Meredith- in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. My brother was two years older. I wanted to be anywhere he was. One day I followed along even though he had tried to send me back home. Having none of that, along I followed. We came to the stand of trees that my brother, Phil, explained were apple trees. It was a crab-apple tree not like my grandmothers tree at all. Phil convinced me to eat one after another. I’m unsure just how many I ate that day but needless to say crab apples and stubborn young girls don’t mix.

Flying Jenny: A flying machine or a beautiful woman? Known only by immediate family members and close friends, my mother Virginia Meredith was the 7th of 8 children. She must have been a firebrand. She was more comfortable working outside on the farm than cooped up with a group of women sitting at a quilt frame.
