The Computer Assisted Genealogy Group of Northern Illinois, known as CAGGNI, is a not-for-profit organization incorporated in the State of Illinois.

The objectives of the group are as follows:

  • Assisting members in their genealogical research and using computers in this endeavor.
  • Keeping members informed on new technologies and techniques to support their research.
  • Providing genealogical and computer mentoring for its membership.
  • Undertaking projects that support the genealogical community in the region.

The group has monthly meetings with presentations and discussions on general Genealogy related topics. Most of our monthly meetings are hybrid style, held both at local libraries in the area for in-person attendees and also on Zoom for remote attendees.

There are also Special Interest Groups (SIG). They are for those interested in more in-depth learning about software or other genealogy topics.

  • DNA SIG: Focused in-depth discussions on DNA related topics.
  • Colonial America SIG: Studies the 13 colonies – including their creation, history, and geography especially as it pertains to sources of information and identification of ancestors and relatives.
  • Family Tree Maker (FTM) SIG: User group for FTM
  • Reunion SIG: User group for Apple users of Reunion
  • Roots Magic+The Master Genealogist (RM+TMG) SIG: User group for RM+TMG
  • Internet SIG: Covers Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage, Findmypast, WikiTree and many others.

WikiTree discussions occur primarily in our Internet SIG. Refer to: CAGGNI WikiTree Presentations for samples of some WikiTree related presentations.

Members of CAGGNI organize biennial Road Trips to genealogical libraries where members research during the day and attend optional social events during the evening. CAGGNI also presents a biennial all-day genealogical conference, named GeneaQuest.
