Summary

The Gunlock CCC camp was built on the east side of the creek from Gunlock, Utah in March 1935. It was also called SCS-2. It was built on private land. About 200 men, mostly from Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky were stationed there. They were a division of the Soil Conservation Corps and worked on fences, flood control, roads, and ditches. When the Gunlock CCC Camp was discontinued in June of 1937, the company was moved over to the Leeds CCC Camp.[1]

My father, Paul Davis worked at this camp sometime between 1935 and 1937. He mailed these pictures home to his sister, Carol, who assembled them into an album. He said he spent most of his time with the two men teams that were sawing down trees. In the winter they would go bobsledding in the cleared areas, dodging the tree stumps. One of his memories was the large area of land where nothing grew, not even sagebrush. He said he later learned that they had discovered uranium on that land which was the cause of the lack of vegetation.[2]

The photographs here are property of Donald P. Davis.

My father, Paul Clinton Davis, worked in this camp between 1935 and 1937. He left behind a photo album with many pictures and a few notes that I would like to share here.
