This page is an attempt to identify all of the Stuckeys who fought on the Confederate side in the Civil War. It is (and probably always will be) heavily "under construction". In researching the information on this page many assumtions(and many errors and omissions) have been made. If anyone has any information about Confederate Stuckeys in the Civil War (or about the Stuckey family in general), please contact me. I am anxious to make the information on this page as complete and accurate as possible

[William H Stuckey] Listed on a [Muster Roll of Company A] [4th Battalion (Hilliard's Legion)] as a 1st Lieut. (although he is not listed as such in Hewett) He is also listed as a Captain on a muster roll of Company E of the same regiment. These companies were among those which were consolidated with the 2nd Battalion to form the [59th Alabama Infantry]. William H. retired as a Captain on 4/30/1864.

[Thomas P. Stuckey] [Company E, 59th Alabama Infantry] Company E was from Dale County and was formed from part of Company B, 4th Battalion, Hilliard's Legion which split up on Sept. 14, 1862. Thomas enlisted in Hilliard's Legion on Feb.15, 1863 at Skipperville, Ala. He surrendered and was paroled at Lynchburg, VA on April 13, 1865

Nelson was apparently transferred to Company E. in the 59th as a Sgt.

There was also a Mississippi unit called the Carroll Dragoons from (Surprise!!) Carroll Co., MS. This unit was also called [Co. B, 2nd Battalion Partisan Rangers]. An S. Williams Stuckey was listed by Hewett in this unit. S.W. Stuckey's headstone in Lauderdale Co. ,MS gives his unit as the 3rd Louisiana Infantry.

After the infantry, Calvin, William, and James Dalton all served in Poe's Cavalry Battalion from its formation to the end of the war. While in Poe's Battalion, Calvin was promoted to Sgt. [Lewis B. Stuckey] [21st (McRae's) Arkansas Infantry Regiment] also known as the 15th (Northwest) Arkansas Infantry; Hobb's-Boone's Infantry Regiment This unit was captured, paroled, and disbanded after the fall of Vicksburg. [The 36th Arkansas Infantry] was being formed about the same and Lewis B. is listed as being part of that unit. [William W. Family of O.F Stuckey (ca 1821 - ca 1893) of Pulaski County, Arkansas (The only member of O.F Stuckey's family to serve was O.F. himself. According to census records, he was born in Indiana.)

[O. F. Stuckey] - Corporal in the Peyton Rifles of. Borland's Regiment (includes Muster Roll). This unit lasted for 10 days from 4/20/1861 - 4/30/1861 when it was disbanded,O.F. re-entered the service in 6/1861 by joining the Company A, 6th Arkansas Infantry. His company was called the Capitol Guards mustered in at Little Rock. O.F declined to transfer from State to Confederate service at Pocahontas in July 1861 and was subsequently discharged. O.F rejoined the service again in the 22nd Arkansas Infantry which was renamed the 20th Arkansas Infantry. O.F was 1st Sgt. in the 20th. [Muster Roll].

Family of Lewis and Dorcas Noland Stuckey of Conecuh and Pickens Counties, Alabama

[James Lewis Stuckey(1842-1884)] [Company G, 40th Alabama Volunteer Infantry] No information has been found on Company G. of this unit

James enlisted April 1862 at Demopolis, AL. Surrendered and paroled at Vicksburg in July 1863. Captured at Big Shanty, GA in June 1864 and paroled from Rock Island POW camp in Illinois on 22 June 1865. James died in 1884. His widow applied for a Confederate veteran's pension in 1903, listing as assets 40 acres of land appraised at $1 per acre; one 2-room house with a front gallery ($20); and household goods, kitchenware, and 5 cows worth $20, for a total value of $80.

[John J. Stuckey(1833-Nov 24, 1863)] [Company G, 40th Alabama Volunteer Infantry] No information has been found on Company G. of this unit

Enlisted at Bethany Church in Demopolis. John was probably KIA at Lookout Mountain, TN. A member of his company, Grant Taylor, in a letter to his wife following the battles at Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge wrote...

"Marietta Ga Nov 28th 1863 Dear Malinda, ...Well, Malinda, the great battle of Chattanooga has been fought and lost...and John Stuckey is missing..."

Another letter, from Grant to Malinda dated 2 Dec 1863... "Beloved wife and children, ...my company lost...2 killed dead, five wounded, 2 severely, one missing and 8 prisoners...and John Stuckey is missing. I fear he was killed."

[William David Stuckey(1835-1873)] [Company G, 40th Alabama Volunteer Infantry] No information has been found on Company G. of this unit

William enlisted as a Sgt on March 1862 at Bethany Church for '3 years or war'. Surrendered with garrison at Vicksburg and paroled on 9 Jul 1863. Listed as AWOL from 23 August to 1 October and reduced in rank. On 15 May 1864 at Resaca, GA, the 40th Alabama was on the far right of the Confederate line, anchored on the Oostanaula River. During the Union assault, William suffered a severe wound in the right kneecap requiring amputation below the knee. Infection later set in, and the remainder of his leg had to be removed at the hip. William spent five months recuperating in hospitals in MS and AL. In 1867, the state of Alabama authorized the issuance of artificial limbs for its veterans and William received an artificial leg at a cost to the state of $70. He died a few months before his 38th birthday, leaving a widow and seven children. Sallie, his wife, applied for a pension in 1898, listing the value of her taxable property as "nothing." She owned 2 cows valued at $15 and household goods worth $20. Neither William or Sallie ever learned to read or write.

[W.D.A.N. STUCKEY] [Company C, 4th Battalion (Hilliard's Legion)]. Also known as the Barbour Light Artillery. Organized at Eufaula in April 1862, it soon became an independent artillery company (Kolb's Battery). It fought in the various battles of the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Atlanta then under Gen'l Hood's in Tennessee.

[John J. Stuckey] Listed in two separate Companies in the same unit. [Companies B & E, 4th Battalion (Hilliard's Legion)]. Company C. of the 4th Battalion was detached and became Kolb's Battery. The rest was consolidated with the 2nd infantry Battalion and became the 59th Alabama infantry. John J. must have transferred to company C, at some point because he is listed in Kolb's Battery.

[Howell Stuckey] Private, [Company I, 3rd Georgia Infantry] also known as the Caswell Guards (previously the Wilkinson Invincibles) from Wilkenson County. Captured, Manassas Gap, Virginia, July 23, 1863. Took oath of allegiance to U. S. Govt. at Point Lookout, Maryland, U. S. service 2/19/1864.

Became 1st Corporal and was wounded in knee at Baker’s Creek, Mississippi on 5/16/1863. Died 5/29/1863.
