Camp Lawton operated for three months in 1864. It was constructed during the summer to house the overflow from the Confederate prisoner of war camp at Andersonville, Georgia. Camp Lawton was constructed of pine logs enclosing a 42-acre area.
Utilizing the railroad junction at Millen, Union prisoners of war from Camp Sumter at Andersonville, Georgia, were transferred to Camp Lawton in the fall 1864. Barracks were not provided, leaving the prisoners to build their own shelters from leftover construction material. Many dug burrows for shelter.
By November 1864, more than 10,000 prisoners were held at Camp Lawton, and 725 prisoners died. There are 291 Unknown Soldier's graves in addition to those listed below. [1]
Upon the advance of General Sherman, sick and wounded prisoners were left behind, the rest were evacuated. The last of the prisoners left on 22 Nov 1864 as Union cavalry arrived four days later.
Camp Lawton and neighboring Millen, Georgia were burned to the ground.
Initially, POW burials were located near the railroad in a series of three trenches; later burials were located in a trench near the mill pond downstream from the stockade. Following the war the remains were moved to the short-lived Lawton National Cemetery. In 1868 the remains were moved to Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, South Carolina.
