The purpose of the Campbells of Franklin Co., PA is to identify the various Campbell families that settled or passed through this county in the 1700s. The long-term goal of this project is to collect male Y-DNA from Campbell male descendants of these Campbell male settlers to help resolve the Campbell colonial lines and their migration to other states.

In an effort to untangle the genealogies of the Campbells of Franklin County we are collecting marriage, land, probate and tax records. Links below to primary sources and early books will be added as they come available.

Campbell Families by Haplogroup

Note: The following Franklin County Campbell lines have Big Y-700 tests that have assigned them a haplogroup. The "kit" followed by a number is the Family Tree DNA test number. To review the raw STR DNA of SNP haplogroup data by kit number visit FTDNA

Haplogroup: R-FT214304 Lines Note: Big Y testing has shown that the following three lines share the FT214304 haplogroup. According to FTDNA, these individuals share a most recent common ancestor estimated to have been born around 1750 CE

Andrew Campbell, Sr. (c1730-1789) of Franklin County, PA., married Esther Jane Gettys
Notes: Big Y sample provided by #B949248
John Campbell, Jr (1787-1867) of Fannett Twp, Franklin Co., PA who married Jane Ritchie/Ritchey is almost certain to be the John Campbell who married Jane Ritchey and moved to Hamilton Ohio. Big Y testing supports this thesis that John Jr is the grandson of Andrew Campbell, Sr. via his son, John Campbell, Sr.

Discovered this paper just this week. It describes the immigrant Charles Campbell who settled in Peters Township, Chester County in about 1734. He had four children, Martha, Michael, William & James. Unfortunately, there is very little info for my potential ancestor, William Campbell 1702-1783, who may be a son of this Charles. Find the paper at https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=pst.000008948595&seq=7 on page 179. I would appreciate any comments you may have.

Paul, I hadn't seen this particular document before. It's a wonderful 50+ pages of stories and anecdotes, but it doesn't have anything new genealogically over what's already above. If you have a full copy of the publication, I'd love to have a copy. Personally, (if I understand your ancestor William 1702-1783), I believe that your William (who married Frances LNU) is the same William as #2 above. (William may have been married twice.) I also believe that William #1, Dougal #2, and Charles #3 were probably brothers whose father may have been James. Not in any way related to the Campbell-Hay line. Have you thought about getting DNA tested? We could use a sample from this line. (See the Campbell DNA Project at FTDNA)

Kevin, it looks like Paul has done a BigY test. His kit is B949248, haplogroup R-FT214304.

Kevin Guy is correct about my BigY test. I'm a bit confused. You say my William (1702-1783) "is the same William as #2 above." The only #2 William I see above is "2. William Campbell (c1785 – 1811) of Franklin Co. PA and Loudoun Co., VA married Catharine Wright [#105647]." That can't be correct. Did you mean my William is likely "1. William Campbell, Sr. (abt 1697 - 10 Jul 1783) married (1) Elizabeth Gibson) and (2) Frances LNU of Peters Twp. Franklin County." above?

Yes, I made a mistake. William #1

Thanks for giving me something interesting and relevant to dig into today. Love these kind of old articles. They may not always prove documented true but I seem to always find something that opens a new rabbit hole or two to fall down. Most interested in the "grandson of the same name (Charles) who located near Pittsburgh Pa." who had two sons living near Blairsville in 1834" Charles and Michael. Will report back after the holiday if I find anything new to to Wiki for Westmoreland (including at this point Indiana, Armstrong, and Butler counties that did not form until 1800).
