County Info

Lee County Virginia was formed after the Revolutionary War in 1792 from the lower end of Russell County. Prior to Russell County's formation on January 2, 1786, Washington County, Virginia encompassed the whole lower portion of the state. Washington county was formed in 1776 after the abolishment of Fincastle County. Fincastle County was formed from Botetourt County on April 8, 1772. When looking at early records for the Campbell's of Lee County, Virginia, it's very imperative to also look at Botetourt, Fincastle, Washington, and Russell County Virginia records.

Settlers were moving into modern-day Lee County as early as 1769, when Joseph Martin made his first attempt at building a fort known as "Martins Station" in present-day Rose Hill. Immediately following his settlement, settlers came from the New River, Greenbrier River, Holston River, and even as far as Maryland and Pennsylvania. After the building of the Wilderness Road by Daniel Boone in 1775, this solidified settlements all long the Powell Valley in Lee County and many descendants of first families are still in Lee County today.

Lee County formed 1792
