History
Dalruadhain was the seat of the kings of Dalriada. St. Ciaran (Kieran), one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland, landed there in the 6th century, after which the site was renamed Kilkerran, afterward Kinlochkerran.
In 1667 it was renamed “Campbeltown” when Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll was granted the area from Charles II.

Occupations
Historically inhabitants of Campbeltown were likely to be farmers, merchants, fishermen or sailors and especially in the 19th century, whiskey distillers or distillery workers. The combination of access to an ample supply of water, peat and grain combined to make Campbeltown known as the “Whiskey Capitol of the World” in 1851. See Campbeltown Distilleries.
