History
War broke out in the autumn of 1939.
Approximately 2,100 bombs fell over Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales between 1940 and March 1944.
The Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour 1939-1945 book is made up 66,375 fatalities in seven volumes. All arranged by county, then local government area. Here I am only concentrating on one local government CARDIFF.
The original volumes are kept at St. George’s Chapel, found at the west end of Westminster Abbey, London, England.
Exceptions
When the Cardiff Civilian War Dead casualty list was made, a few areas were excluded and were called Rural Cardiff. These generally covered casualties taken to Whitchurch Hospital, for the benefit of this book have been included. Details are highlighted throughout.
A few exceptions included in the book as they died in Cardiff;
1. MADDOCKS, Ethel May was injured during an air raid in Swansea, later died at Whitchurch Hospital, Cardiff.
2. WAKEHAM, Frank lived in Cardiff, injured while on duty at Buckingham Palace, died 15 months later in Cardiff, his home. M.V.O. Captain Home Guard (Member Victoria Order Fifth Class).
3. THOMAS, David Francis – caught pneumonia when working at Garth Observer Post.
4. DAVIES, Henry Alfred – died as a result of illness contracted while on duty in air raids.
Specific Locations with numerous casualties
The worst night began about 6.37pm on Thursday 2 January 1941 and continued for 10 hours, it was a full moon and this lit up the city, possibly making it an easy target.
Hollyman’s Shelter
64 Corporation Road, became known as Hollyman’s Shelter. Mr. Alfred John Hollyman had a bakery and beneath his shop, a cellar which he fitted out with seats.
On the 2 January 1941, there were signs of an air raid and Alfred John Hollyman called out to people in the street offering them refuge in his cellar. The building received a direct hit.
Newspaper reports state that 32 people died in the shelter, though only 11 are listed in the Civilian War Dead book.

Hospitals Listed
Reports on some casualties state they were taken to one of the hospitals, a few were only listed as dying in hospital without stating where they were injured.
They are as follows:
30a Cowbridge Road or The Lodge/City Lodge – in 1839 it was originally a Workhouse, by 1908 had the capacity for over 1000 inmates. In 1872 an infirmary for the sick was added offering 164 beds. In 1948 it became known as St. David’s Hospital.
Royal Hamadryad – in 1866 was a 43 year old frigate, H.M.S. Hamadryad, it was used as a hospital ship offering free treatment for sailors. In 1897 a decision was made to build a permanent seamen’s hospital. In 1905 a permanent hospital was opened and the Hamadryad was re-floated and towed away. The hospital was named Royal Hamadryad and had 54 beds, electricity and continued to offer free treatment until 1948 when the National Health Service (N.H.S.) came about.
Royal Infirmary – in 1822 was called the Cardiff Dispensary, in 1837 was known as the Glamorganshire and Monmouthshire Infirmary and Dispensary. New and current building opened in 1883 and between 1911 to 1923 was known as King Edward VII Hospital. In 1923 became known as Royal Infirmary (aka CRI – Cardiff Royal Infirmary).
City Hospital or Whitchurch Hospital, went under many name changes, between 1939 and 1945 also known as Emergency Hospital, Whitchurch.
Rookwood Hospital – was built in 1866 as a family home, then in 1918 was converted into a convalescent home for officers, and ex-servicemen. In 1932 it became a general hospital. At the present time it is used as a rehabilitation hospital.
