About the Project

The Caris Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Caris name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Caris name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Caris's), by time period (18th Century Caris's), or by topic (Caris DNA, Caris Occupations, Caris Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

My mother Gertrude Palmer Caris was the most recent of a long line of Caris, Geres, Geris, Gerrits, Gerritsen ancestors. Our line in America arrived on the Robert and Alice in 1742 landing at Philadelphia and first settled in Pa. In the early 1800’s they along with other family members who had also arrived with them on that ship traveled to Ohio to make their homes in the wild Western Reserve. I have a voluminous number of personal memories and letters from the eighteenth and nineteenth century that help make real the difficult experiences the earliest Ohio settlers had. It has also been interesting and informative to communicate with other Caris researchers who have insights and access to Caris family history that help me learn more about my ancestors.

The Caris line is a difficult one to follow, as the surname has so many spelling variations. In my tree I have found Caris, as of the time the family moved to Ohio, Geres when some of the family arrived on the Robert and Alice in 1742 and Gehres, Garis, Gerrits, Gerittsen. I am certain of relationships through Johan Philip Geres (name later changed to Garis or Caris) and am have evidence further back in the line. But this has been a challenge and I’ve relied so much on my mother’s research years ago, corresponding with other Caris researchers, visiting various distant relatives, etc. Now I’m eager to collaborate with others who are working on this surname as well.
