Surname/tag: Caroline_Smith_De_Windt
The goal of this project is to locate the burial site of the granddaughter of the second President of the United States John Adams, Caroline Amelia De Windt (nee Smith).
Right now this project just has one member, me. I am Khaled Sakhel. I am an author and this topic is referred to in my book.
Caroline Amelia died in the unfortunate steamboat Henry Clay disaster in 1852. At the time she was traveling with her daughter Caroline Elizabeth Downing (nee De Windt and later remarried Monell) and her son in law Landscape Architect Andrew Jackson Downing. Both Caroline Amelia and Andrew Jackson Downing perished in that steamboat accident.
I believe if we find the burial site of John Peter De Windt who died in 1870, 18 years after his wife's unfortunate premature death, we would be able to find Caroline Amelia's as well. Recently I visited the cities of Newburgh, Fishkill and Beacon, NY. I found Caroline Elizabeth's grave.
John Peter De Windt owned land in Beacon where he build a house. His family (likely including his father John Peter De Wiindt senior) had burial vault on their land. However it seems they were moved in the early 1900s to Fishkill. I am unable to find records of this move.
Tasks:
- Find the record of moving De Windt Family vault from Beacon to Fishkill
