Carpatho-Rusyns in America

The goal of this project is to help those descended from the ethnic group known as Carpatho-Rusyns to meet and exchange information.

Carpatho-Rusyns (pronounced Kar-PAY-tho ROOS-ins) are an ethnic group that originally settled in a region in eastern Europe known as the Subcarpathian Rus'. This ancestral homeland encompasses parts of southern Poland, eastern Slovakia, western Ukraine and part of northern Romania.

Right now this project just has one member, me. I am Skip Magyar.

There are approximately 500,000 Rusyns in the United State and here are some of the tasks that I think need to be done. I'll be working on them, and could use your help.

  • Find others that have one or more ancestors who were Carpatho-Rusyn
  • Identify the village on the old country where our ancestors lived.
  • Identify others through DNA that we are related to and try to connect these cousins genealogically.

My Rusyn surnames are Rusnak, Gulash, Lesko, Beneski, Mikula and variations on these surnames.

Will you join me? Please post a comment here on this page, in G2G using the project tag, or send me a private message.

Feel free to contact me anytime at jmagyar2@comcast.net if you prefer.

Thanks!

I am looking for my grandfathers ancesteral roots in the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine and my Grandmothers Roots in Lviv Ukraine (at one point was under Polish borders.) Any help in researching these regions would be helpful. Thank you!
