The Carpenters' Arms was a pub in Thornwood Common. It is now a restaurant.
Known license transfers:
- 10 Sept 1869: "CARPENTERS’ ARMS, Thornwood-common – Mr. Longmore applied on behalf of Henry Smith for a beerhouse certificate. – This person was last week convicted of two offences—refusing to quit the Cock Inn, and assaulting Supt. Simpson in the discharge of his duty. It was also stated that he had on two previous occasions been convicted, once for selling beer during illegal hours, and for having unjust measures.--Mr. Longmore stated that Smith was in very ill health, and had a large family of children. He was not a man who was in the habit of being intoxicated, but on the last occasion named he took rather more drink than he was accustomed to, and the consequence was he did not know what he was about.--Mr. Rawlings said he was instructed by the brewers—Messrs. McMullen—to tell the bench that if the certificate were granted at the present time they would take care on any future occasion of misconduct to find another tenant.--On these conditions the bench granted the certificate."[1]
- 17 Oct 1924: "The Licence of the Carpenter’s Arms, Thornwood Common, was transferred from Mr. G. Sands to Mr. C. F. Turner, formerly licensee of the Wheatsheaf, Theydon Bois."[2]
- 17 July 1936: "...the Carpenter’s Arms, Thornwood, to Mr. Charles Wm. Orman."[3]
- 4 Feb 1938: "LICENCES GRANTED.--A wine licence for the Victoria Tavern, Loughton, and one for the Carpenters Arms, North Weald, were granted."[4]
- 13 Apr 1938: "Other licences confirmed were:...--Wine, on:...Reginald Dale, the Carpenter’s Arms North Weald Bassett"[5]
