The Cashman/Geary/Mahoney knot is an extremely tangled one.

Hannah "Annie" Cashman was born in 1858 in Portland, Connecticut, to Irish immigrant parents. Her death record lists her parents as Patrick Cashman and Bridget Geary, of Ireland -- however, this is the only record of these names. There are no 1860/1870 census records for Cashman families in the Northeast that are exact matches to this information, and each of the census records for Cashman families has various problems.

Various records (death, census, etc) show that the following four people considered themselves to be siblings:

Hannah Cashman (later Fitzgerald), born 1858 in CT

Daniel Cashman, born 1864 in CT

William Mahoney, born 1861/1864 in CT

Jeremiah Mahoney, born 1861/1864 in CT

The 1880 census shows William (age 19) and Jeremiah (age 15) living with their parents, Patrick and Bridget Mahoney (parents born in Ireland, children in CT). In 1900 and 1910, Jeremiah Mahoney (born in CT) is in Newark, NJ. In 1910, Daniel Cashman and William Mahoney live next to each other in Middletown.

The most likely explanation is that Patrick Cashman, father of Hannah and Daniel died sometime before 1880, and his widow Bridget married Patrick Mahoney (who was also widowed before 1880). However, there is no evidence that directly supports this theory -- no death record for Patrick, husband of Bridget; no marriage record in the right time period for a widowed Bridget and Patrick Mahoney.

Quoted Primary Sources

Daniel Cashman Obituary -- The Middletown Sun, Monday March 25, 1912 "[... he also leaves] one sister, Mrs. Patrick Fitzgerald, one brother in Newark NJ and another who resides in this city"

Daniel Cashman Obituary -- The Middletown Sun, Wednesday March 27, 1912 "[...] The pall bearers were Joseph Taylor, Thomas Nelan, Daniel Fitzgerald, James O'Brien, Thomas Fitzgerald and Henry Lee."

NOTE: Daniel and Thomas Fitzgerald are the names of two of Hannah's sons. Henry Lee would marry Hannah's daughter Anna Marie Fitzgerald in June 1912 (so they were likely engaged at this point).

Hannah Fitzgerald Obituary -- The Evening Press, Middletown, CT, October 23, 1918 "[She is survived by] two brothers, William Mahoney of this city and Jeremiah, of Newark, NY [sic]."
