Castel di Sangro is a commune in central Italy. It is the main entry into the Abruzzo region with a population of about 6,000. The city dates back to antiquity and in Roman times was known as Aufidena which was the home of the Samnites until they were conquered and incorporated in Rome in the 1st century b.c.
One of the main attractions is the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta which dates back to 1700.

History
During WWII Castel di Sangro was almost completely destroyed during the Battle of the Sangro River by retreating German Army troops and Advancing Canadian Troops.
