Ridder Eustachius "Steesken, Justacius" van Brakel lived in this castle. We don't know who the first Lord of Brakel was. According to historicus Baron WA van Spaen it was a younger son of the Lords of Altena. He became the owner of the Castle of Brakel and started naming himself "Van Brakel." Cousin Hans Baijense created a beautiful profile of Ridder Eustachius.

Kasteel Ter Leede

According to the Chronicle writers the castle van de Leede was built around 1270 by Pelgrim van de Leede. According to Nederlands Biografisch Woordenboek it was Pelgrim son of Folpert van de Lede. It mentions some legendary stories that Pelgrim sold his soul to the devil. He drowned in 1304 at the same event as Jan III van de Lede. In reality it was probably one of the Jan van Leede's or their forefathers that built the Lede castle.
