This page is part of the England Project.

This page gives guidance on how to set up new categories in England.

It follows on from the basic instructions set out on England Orphan Trail: Categories and New Categories in England: The Basics. It is intended to be used by WikiTree members familiar with categorisation and with England.

Contents

Category Information Boxes

Category Information Boxes are usually all that is required on a category page. If necessary, a single line of additional text can be added below the CIB to explain any peculiarities about how the category is meant to be used. Detailed descriptions of the subject of the category should go on a Free Space Page, linked to the CIB using the "spacepage=" parameter.

Place (Location) Categories

General information about place categories is here: English Place Name Categories. The page explains what qualifies as a "Place" in England, and how to nest the place into the category hierarchy.

The Location CIB for use in England is this:

{{CategoryInfoBox Location
|parent=
|parent1=
|parent2=
|project= England
|team=
|wikidataID=
|coordinate=
|webpage= http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/###
|webpagetext= Vision of Britain
}}

To find the required information to complete the CIB, go to the website https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Main_Page and search for the place. Scroll down to near the bottom of the page, and check that there is a "Vision of Britain place ID". (Note that this is not the same as a "Vision of Britain unit ID".) If the location does not have both a Wikidata page and a Vision of Britain place ID, the England Project does not consider it to be a "place".

In the CIB, "parent" is the historic county as named in Vision of Britain. "parent1" is the modern county as shown on Wikidata, if different.[1] "team" is the England Project county team, usually the same as "parent". The "wikidataID" is the number, beginning with Q, shown in the Wikidata web page address - include the Q with the number in the CIB. Copy the Vision of Britain place ID number to replace the ### in the "webpage" address in the CIB template.

Now scroll back up the Wikidata page to find the map labelled "coordinate location". Click on the coordinates on the map (which are in degrees, minutes and seconds) to be taken to the GeoHack website.

DMS coordinates

Copy and paste the decimal format coordinates (at the top of the page) into the "coordinate" parameter of the CIB.

If the location does not qualify as a "Place" - for example, a hamlet associated with a village, or a small district within a town - you can still set up a category and use the CIB if there will be a sufficient number of profiles to warrant a category. The "parent" will not be the county, but the "Place" (town/village/city) which the location is part of, entered into the CIB as "Place, County". Delete the "webpage" and "webpagetext" lines if there is no Vision of Britain entry, or replace with an alternative website if one exists.

If there is a Wikipedia page, do not add it directly as a "webpage", but look for the Wikidata link (depending on which browser you use, you may need to open a "Tools" or "Main Menu" to find it), and use the Wikidata ID instead. That will automatically generate the link to the Wikipedia page in the user's own language.

Religious Congregations

The Religious Congregations CIB is this:

{{CategoryInfoBox Congregation
|name=
|parent= (county) (required)
|location= (place, county) (required)
|affiliation= (denomination)
|cemetery= (linked graveyard, if any)
|school= (associated church school, if any)
|wikidataID=
|webpage= http....
|webpagetext=
|coordinate= (decimal format - required)
|startdate=
|enddate=
}}

Please check that the congregation name is correct and unambiguous: it must include the word "Church", "Chapel" or similar, to distinguish it from any place or other institution with the same name, and it must include the county. "Saint" in a church name should always be abbreviated to "St" (no full stop in English usage), except in the phrase All Saints.

The county name in the "parent" parameter will automatically generate the parent category "County, Religious Congregations". You do not need to add the "Religious Congregations" bit: the CIB does it for you. The other parent category automatically generated is the location.

Any parameter not required in the CIB can be left blank, and will not display on the category page.

Quaker Monthly Meetings were peripatetic, and did not have a fixed location. The CIB should be completed as follows:

{{CategoryInfoBox Congregation
|name= Name Monthly Meeting
|parent= County
|parent1=Quaker Meetings, England
|location= County Quakers
|affiliation= Quakers
|project=Religious Society of Friends
|startdate=
|enddate=
}}

Cemeteries

The CIB for cemeteries in England is this:

{{CategoryInfoBox Cemetery
|name=
|parent= (county) (required)
|spacepage=
|location= (place, county) (required)
|findagraveID=
|billiongravesID=
|coordinate= (decimal format - required)
|affiliation= (adds linked church, if any)
|startdate=
|enddate=
|address=
}}

For cemeteries, "parent" must be the modern ceremonial county, not the historic county that we normally use. The difference between the historic and modern ceremonial counties is described on this page: Space:Categorisation_of_English_Places:_Further_Issues. As with the Religious Congregations, the CIB automatically places the cemetery in the parent category "County, Cemeteries" - there is no need to add the "Cemeteries" bit.

The category name should be in the format "Cemetery Name", "Place", "Ceremonial County", e.g., Category:St Chad's Churchyard, Kirkby, Merseyside. The parent county is the modern ceremonial county of Merseyside, but the location links to "Kirkby, Lancashire", using the historic county name.

The best starting point is to find the cemetery on Find a Grave, though the cemetery names are not always correct there (double check with other sources if possible), and the addresses given tend to include the local authority district, which is not used as part of English postal addresses and should be ignored. The post code is useful for finding the cemetery using satnav: check the site https://www.royalmail.com/find-a-postcode for the correct postal address.

Note that in England, the word "Cemetery" implies a municipal cemetery managed by the local authority (borough, district, town or parish council). Catholic and Non-conformist churches may use other terms, such as "Burial Ground". We do not use the term "Church Cemetery".

Other Structures

For schools, historic houses, hospitals, etc., the Structures CIB can be used:

{{CategoryInfoBox Structure
|name=
|aka=
|address=
|parent=(required)
|parent1=
|parent2=
|project=England
|team=
|spacepage=
|location=(place, county) (required)
|wikidataID=
|webpage=
|webpagetext=
|coordinate=(decimal format - required)
}}

In this case, the parent category needs to be completed in full, e.g., "Hampshire, Schools", or "Derbyshire, Historic Houses".

Migrants

The landing level category for emigrants from England is [[Category:Migrants from County to State/Province]]. Guidance on setting up the CIBs for the migrant categories is here: Space:Migration_Category_Structure.

Census categories

Census categories in England should only be created as part of a One Place Study. There should be an accompanying Free Space Page defining the census piece and study area. A good example is 1841 Census Chittlehampton. Profiles should only be allocated to the census category for a specific place and year, as part of the One Place Study.

The census category should be named in the format "Category:Place, County, 1xxx Census". (Place, County should match the format of the corresponding location category, including any disambiguating description when there are two or more places with the same name in the same county.) The parent categories should be "Category: Place, County One Place Study" and "Category:County, Census Records".

"Category:County, Census Records" should have parent categories "Category:England, Census Records" and "Category:County, Place Studies".

"Category:England, Census Records" replaces the existing category "United Kingdom Census Records", which is in the process of being removed.

The category hierarchy is thus, for example:

Nobility

For the categorisation scheme for the Nobility of the British Isles, including the Peerages and the Baronetcies, see this page: Space:British_Isles_Nobility. The page explains the difference between "England", "Great Britain" and "United Kingdom", and when it is appropriate to use each.

Disasters

Guidance on how to categorise disasters is on this page: Space:How_to_Categorise_Disasters.

Footnotes

  1. It is not necessary to add the line "parent1=Cambridgeshire" to locations in Huntingdonshire, as the whole of Huntingdonshire became a district of Cambridgeshire in 1974. Similarly, it is superfluous to add "parent1=Cumbria" to locations in Cumberland and Westmorland.
