Part of the Poland Project |
Poland has an extremely long and complex history of border changes throughout the centuries. The purpose of this categorization structure is to allow any page, cemetery, project, Wikitree profile, etc. be categorized under the present day category regardless of historical time period. Wikitree profiles must always reflect the correct language in the birth/marriage/death location fields. The present day location serves as an index to anything that is connected to it.
Categorization is based off village information collected in 2022. If there should ever be another regional change, please refer back to this time period.
For the purpose of simplifying explanation on this page, Category: Babice, Oświęcim, Lesser Poland, Poland is used as the example.
Contents |
Formal Tier in Category Structure
- [[Category: Poland]]
- [[Category: Poland Voivodeships]]
- [[Category: Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland]]
- [[Category: Oświęcim County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship]] County, Voivodeship
- [[Category: Babice, Oświęcim, Lesser Poland, Poland]] Village, County, Voivodship, Country
- [[Category: Oświęcim County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship]] County, Voivodeship
- [[Category: Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland]]
- [[Category: Poland Voivodeships]]
The parallel structure in Polish will appear like this (County and Powiat are the same):
- [[Category: Polska]]
- [[Category: Województwa Polski]]
- [[Category: Województwo małopolskie, Polska]]
- [[Category: Powiat oświęcimski, województwo małopolskie]]
- [[Category: Babice, Oświęcim, Małopolska, Polska]]
- [[Category: Powiat oświęcimski, województwo małopolskie]]
- [[Category: Województwo małopolskie, Polska]]
- [[Category: Województwa Polski]]
Wording in Structure
The following shortened Polish wording should be used in each village category:
- village name, powiat, voivodeship, Poland. For example:
- Babice, Oświęcim, Lesser Poland, Poland
- Babice, Oświęcim, Małopolska, Polska (parallel category in Polish)
- If there are two villages with the same name in the same county, add the "gmina" for both villages, you may need to rename an existing category if you come across duplicate names later. Finding the gmina is very easy, but it is not often you will find two villages of the same name in the same county. From Wikipedia: "Babice (Polish pronunciation: [baˈbit͡sɛ]) is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Oświęcim, within Oświęcim County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in southern Poland." [1]
- For example: Babice (gmina Oświęcim), Oświęcim, Lesser Poland, Poland
- For consistency of categories use (example): Babice (gmina Oświęcim) on both en and pl categories. "gmina Oświęcim" is correct grammar in Polish. In English we do not have a gmina, so in this case it acts like an adjective/descriptor and not part of the proper noun.
- Hint: Often times when you open the Wikipedia page for the village, the "gmina" will appear along side of it. This is an indicator it is highly likely there is another village with the same name in the same powiat.
- For example: Babice (gmina Oświęcim), Oświęcim, Lesser Poland, Poland
In the case of the Polish parallel structure: Polish grammar is correct in using lowercase letters: "województwa lwowskie", however Wikitree will automatically capitalize the first letter upon creating a category. Capitalization occurs when the proper name stands alone: Cieplice or Jarosław with no other description.
How to Categorize a Village/City Manually
Categorization of Poland will be based off of present day (2022) administrative boundaries. The Poland category already has all voivodeships and their counties listed from present day, including parallel language categories in Polish. Parallel categories are "mirrored" categories. With a mirrored category: a page or Wikitree profile can be placed in one or the other category and will appear in all categories within that mirror. Caution: categories do not mirror, you will need to use both English and Polish category locations when adding to another existing category (Jewish Roots projects, Military categories, historical region categories.)
You begin by adding BOTH the English and Polish versions of the location in the Wikitree profile or page: {See profile Maria Dabrowska as an example.)
[[Category: Babice, Oświęcim, Lesser Poland, Poland]]
[[Category: Babice, Oświęcim, Małopolska, Polska]]
After saving the page or profile, both locations will be listed in red font, you will need to click each one, open BOTH into their own window on your computer and add the following:
Hint: all counties have been created, and each county has one village category. It may be easier to open the village category in the your same county and use the CIB as a template. Change information accordingly. For the Polish category, you will click on the mirror "pl" and do the same.
After clicking on: [[Category: Babice, Oświęcim, Lesser Poland, Poland]], add a Category Information Box (you may copy/paste the CIB from this page and change information accordingly):
{{Aka|Babice, Oświęcim, Lesser Poland, Poland|en}} parallel category setup
{{CategoryInfoBox Location
|parentsort=
|aka=
|parent= Oświęcim County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship
|project=Poland
|coordinate=
|wikidataID=
|profiles=yes
|spacepage=
}}
*'''You may add profiles or pages to this category from any point in history with this text: <nowiki>[[Category: Babice, Oświęcim, Lesser Poland, Poland]]</nowiki>
*add brief Wikipedia description with citation [...]
After clicking on: [[Category: Babice, Oświęcim, Małopolska, Polska]], add a Category Information Box:
{{Aka|Babice, Oświęcim, Lesser Poland, Poland|pl}} parallel category mirror in Polish. Copy/Paste the aka set up in the English category and ONLY change the language from en to pl
{{CategoryInfoBox Location
|parentsort=
|aka=
|lang=pl
|parent= Powiat oświęcimski, województwo małopolskie
|project=Poland
|coordinate=
|wikidataID=

}}
*'''Kategorie Polska służą jako indeks do dowolnego profilu Wikitree, kategorii itp. z dowolnego okresu w historii. Skopiuj/wklej ten tekst, aby dodać kategorię: <nowiki>[[Category: Babice, Oświęcim, Małopolska, Polska]]</nowiki>
*add brief Wikipedia description in POLISH with citation [...]
See example: Category: Babice, Oświęcim, Lesser Poland, Poland
For both above CIBs:
- parentsort=enter in the name of the village WITHOUT diacritics if there are any. This will integrate villages with diacritics into the English alphabet so they will be more easily located. What is a diacritic? Letters such as Ś, Ż, Ł, ą, ę, etc. Example: Oświęcim = Oswiecim.
- "|aka=" (aka within the CIB, NOT the parallel) ONLY add this information if a historical category exists. Otherwise leave it blank. See below on how to mirror the historical category to the present day.
- For Prussia, use German spelling on both the "en" and "pl" categories. Leave this blank if you have not set up a parallel category in "Historical" for the Prussian name of the village. Space:Categorization_structure_for_Prussia
- For Galicia, use the proper Galicia village counterpart. 95% of village categories have been set up and you should connect an existing village through "Historical" parallel. Category:Kingdom_of_Galicia_and_Lodomeria
- For Congress Poland, use the English version of the name on the "en" category and Polish version of the name on the "pl category. Categories are not being actively created by the Poland Project as the village name was the same. If a category is set up due to a project, please connect through parallel "Historical". Category:Congress_Poland
- coordinate = is found on Wikipedia on the top right of a page, click on it and you will want to copy/paste the "decimal coordinate" that looks like this: 53.8875, 18.349167
- Wikipedia ID = is found on Wikipedia page, in the left column and usually called Wikipedia Item. Click on the link. The ID will look like this: Q894316
- Profiles = yes. Means yes Wikitree profiles can be categorized into this category.
- spacepage = (leave blank). Used for Free Space Pages or One Place Study Pages
Now that the category has been created, you only need to add one (English or Polish) version to a profile and it will appear on both village category pages (this includes if the present day is paralleled to a historical category below.) You may need to copy/paste the newly created category (example)[[Category: Babice, Oświęcim, Lesser Poland, Poland]] into pages/profiles directly as it may not appear via the widget for a couple days.
Wikitree Bee Shortcut
You may create a category using the "Wikitree Bee" extension on Chrome or Firefox.
- Find the English Wikipedia page for the village, if there is not a an English Wikipedia page the category will need to be created manually (above).
- Remember to consider whether there are two villages with the same name in the same powiat. In this case you will be able to rename the category and add the gmina after it is initially created in edit mode (see the "change name" option next to the category name).
- For example: Babice (gmina Oświęcim), Oświęcim, Lesser Poland, Poland
- If the village was in former Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria or Prussia, you will need to contact Tina or Skye and we will create the historical parallel for you.
- Please remember to add the newly created village category to the Wikitree profiles when finished. You do not need to add both the new EN and PL parallel categories, only add one. The profiles will appear across both after Wikitree software goes through their backup/refresh.
- If you have several profiles where this category is needed, you may want to use Wikitree+ as you can batch categorize them. For more information you may contact Skye directly.
Integration of Project Categories or Historical Categories
When a present-day category is created and there is also a historical category present, the protocol is to bridge them together using a parallel or mirror. In order to bridge historical locations and present day name locations please review the following information:
- Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, Austrian Empire et al.
- Congress Poland, Russian Empire
- Prussia, German Empire
Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria
Roughly 95% of the villages have already been created in Galicia, including their present day parallels. Please contact Skye if you do not see your village and she will create it for you.
If the village was a German Colony, note that these colonies were small communities outside the village. If the name of the colony had a specific German name, a category may be created, although it CANNOT be attached to the present day location. See: Category:Josephine_Colonization. Most of the German colonies were absorbed into the nearby historic village after World War I. See: Category: Rauchersdorf, Nisko as an example.
Congress Poland, Russian Empire
At this time, historical Russian Empire is very underdeveloped. The Poland Project is not creating historical village categories for this area at this time. Please DO NOT create villages under Congress Poland unless you are working with a project. In that case, villages categorized under Congress Poland should be paralleled to present day village information under "Historical" parallel.
When a mirror has been created between present day location and historical please fill out the "|aka=" in the CIB across all THREE categories.
- Use English version of the name for the English present day Poland category.
- Use the Polish version of the name for the Polish present day Poland category.
- If you wish to add the Cyrillic/Russian name, please add it UNDER the CIB. At this time Cyrillic/Russian language is NOT encouraged because Wikitree does not have moderators to support the language.
Prussia, German Empire
When a present day village category is needed in what was Prussia, the Poland Project works to bridge present location to historical location. All Wikitree profiles will nest together.
- See Space:Categorization_structure_for_Prussia for more information.
- If you DO NOT create the historical category for Prussia, please leave the aka field within the CIB blank. This will be picked up when the Poland Project runs periodic reports, so they know to create the Prussian category.
When a mirror has been created between present day location and historical please fill out the "|aka=" in the CIB across all THREE categories.
Language
- Proof read by a Polish speaker: "Hi, totally understandable to me: Babice, (powiat) Oświęcim(ski), (województwo) Małopolskie."
- You may need to use the Polish server to find the correct information on your village, not all villages will appear in the English Wikipedia or in your normal search engines. To find the Polish server click here: https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Strona_g%C5%82%C3%B3wna. Alternative languages are always in the left column toward the bottom of the page.
