CategoryInfoBox for French Location Categories

CategoryInfoBox for French Location Categories

French location categories use the Location CategoryInfoBox. Here is how to fill out the CategoryInfoBox parameters.

Municipality LocationCategoryInfoBox

Copy the following template to the category text:

{{CategoryInfoBox Location

|name= Leave empty, this will display the name of the category
|imageleft= Image name for a flag image on WikiTree.
|imageright= France_Images-2.png (this will display the French flag)
|parent= Name of the department category
|parent1= Name of the historic province category
|project= France
|spacepage= Optional. Name of the associated Free Space Page without the Space: prefix.
|wikidataID= WikiDataID of the location. Only if the location has Wikipedia/Wikidata page.
|coordinate= Longitude and latitude of the location, separated by comma. It is displayed in URL on OpenStreetMap or Google. Example: 46.0712,14.5318

}}

Then fill out the parameters.

There are two options for the first flag image (imageleft parameter):

  • This can be a regional flag if the region has a strong identity and an official flag. Examples: Brittany, Normandy, Haut-Rhin, Bas-Rhin (using the distinctive Upper Alsace and Lower Alsace flags). Example: Gisors, Eure.
  • In other cases, the French flag is used, so that the French flag displays on both sides of the box. Example Beauvais, Oise.
  • For the WikiData ID, you can click on "WikiData item" from the Wikipedia page of the municipality and get the ID from there.
  • Still from the WikiData page, scroll to the "coordinate location" property, click on the coordinates (this gets you to the GeoHack page) and you can copy the decimal coordinates from there.

Department LocationCategoryInfoBox

Copy the following template to the category text:

{{CategoryInfoBox Location

|name= Name of the department. Add the department name here, so that it will display correctly.
|imageleft= Image name for the department flag image on WikiTree.
|imageright= France_Images-2.png (this will display the French flag)
|parent= France, Départments
|parent1= Name of the region category
|project= French Roots
|spacepage= Name of the associated Free Space Page without the Space: prefix. Example: Slovenia
|wikidataID= WikiDataID of the location. Only if the location has Wikipedia/Wikidata page.
|coordinate= Optional. Longitude and latitude of the location, separated by comma. It is displayed in URL on OpenStreetMap or Google. Example: 46.0712,14.5318
|succ1text=
|succ1prev1=
|succ1prev2=
|succ1prev3=
|succ1next1=
|succ1next2=
|succ1next3=
|webpage= Full URL of Departmental Archives website
|searchwebpage= Full URL of the Departmental Archives civil registration search form
|subcat= yes

}}

Then fill out the parameters. Here is an example of a "finished" department (see the result at Category:Oise, France):

{{CategoryInfoBox Location

|name= Oise
|imageleft= Departement_de_l_Oise-2.png
|imageright= France_Images-2.png
|parent= Hauts-de-France
|parent1= France, Départements
|project= French Roots
|spacepage= Département de l'Oise
|wikidataID= Q12675
|coordinate= 49.383333, 2.416667
|succ1text= Timeline (1790/Present)
|succ1prev1= Île-de-France (Province)
|succ1prev2= Picardie
|subcat= yes

}}

  • The flag image has to be taken from Wikimedia Commons and uploaded to the free-space page for the department.
  • The links to Department Archives may be found by googling them or from Space:France_genealogical_resources
  • For the WikiData ID, you can click on "WikiData item" from the Wikipedia page of the department and get the ID from there.
  • Still from the WikiData page, scroll to the "coordinate location" property, click on the coordinates (this gets you to the GeoHack page) and you can copy the decimal coordinates from there.
