Category Structure for Finnish Place Locations
Profiles belonging to Finland should be categorised by the parish in which they were born, married or died.
Modern Finland consists of 19 regions called maakunta (landskap). These are the main location categories below "Finland". The subcategories of these regions are the parish categories.
Since the project uses three different languages it is important that all languages end in the same parish location category (that will be the category of the profiles, whether you are Finnish, Swedish or English speaking). The rest of the categories (above parishes) will be in all three languages.
Category names for parishes should be written in both Finnish and Swedish if there are known names in both languages for the parish. If the majority of the population was Finnish then the Swedish name should be written in parenthesis, example: Helsinki (Helsingfors), and vice versa. This way is already used by Hiski and Finland Project has decided to do the same. (Both Finnish and Swedish are official languages of Finland, it’s not just a translation thing, both names are used in official documents).
This is an example of the location structure for Finland in English, Finnish and Swedish:
- English language structure:
- [[Category: Finland (en)]]
- [[Category: Uusimaa Region]]
- [[Category: Kirkkonummi (Kyrkslätt)]]
- [[Category: Uusimaa Region]]
- Finnish language structure:
- [[Category: Soumi]]
- [[Category: Uudenmaan maakunta]]
- [[Kirkkonummi (Kyrkslätt)]]
- [[Category: Uudenmaan maakunta]]
- Swedish language structure:
- [[Category: Finland (sv)]]
- [[Category: Nylands landskap]]
- [[Kirkkonummi (Kyrkslätt)]]
- [[Category: Nylands landskap]]
As for smaller locations than the parish (like a village), they should have a category name consisting of both village name and parish name (since it is possible/likely that the same village name can be used in more than one parish).
Example: [[Category: Abrahamsby, Kirkkonummi (Kyrkslätt)]]
If you need a category created, please contact the Categorisation Project or Nordic Project's Category Team.
